With Alton stepping down due to Family commitments..

We had a very good atmosphere down at Masterton with a heap of flying being done, Along with the very impressive flying that was seen , I personally feel that the heli scene throughout the country Is In a healthy state .

We have to encourage everyone to go to these fly ins that we have for this hobby of ours to help It continue to grow and increase the level of skill that Is obviously out there. Of personal interest to me the 3D comp went off very well. But after running the first round It was felt by the judges that we needed to make some changes

The way It was set up with points for each recognizable maneuver being scored In a 3 min period It was felt the pilots were not showing off their skills to their best ability and were trying to get score points by cramming as many maneuvers Into the 3 minutes that they could, no matter how messy It looked .

This point was further evidenced by the flying standard before and after the comp which I must say was some of the best that I have seen in this country ,So to help Improve things , at the A .G. M. the following changes were discussed ,voted on and passed by all present for the following changes to the 3 D Competition.

1
The present FAI Maneuvers for each grade were to be left as they are at present . A caller must be used to call the start and finish of each maneuver
2
Three maneuvers of the pilots choice to be taken from Simons Galtec J R Challenge list along with the K factors To be Included. These will also be judged out of ten points.
3
Two Mins of free style which will be judged for style and presentation so that the pilot can show off his skills to the best advantage . This will be judged out of 25 points , No caller necessary for this part of the flight
4
The time of two mins will be timed and the heli must be down In the square Inside the two minutes as we do at present, with a one minute horn sounding, also a 30 second one if the pilot wishes . A 5 point penalty Is imposed if the heli is not in the Square
The pilot may land In the square and start the 2 Mins Free style from there If he wishes
5
All scores will be added up and normalized at the end of the competition Hopefully these changes will cement down this competition for the future and will let the comp grow .We may need a bit more time at the nationals If get the additional numbers showing up for thisComp as I feel we should have run a few more rounds.

But what we did was really great and everyone had a good time down there with a hellava lot of fuel being used .

Cheers Graeme
