Interested in Model Helicopters

Model Helicopter flying is a challenging and rewarding sport. The Radio controlled Helicopter is capable of all the aerobatics you can think of. It just takes a lot of practice.

Some Answers to the Common Questions:

How high/far does it fly The simple answer is "Line of Sight" for your basic radio controled model. The average helicopter will fly for 15-30 minutes with most of that being inside a 600m square box.
How much does it cost They range from a beginners set-up of around $1200 to an experts set-up of $6000-$8000 and beyond. Like most hobbies you can spend quite a bit if you wish to.
Engines and Fuel Most Helicopters run what iscalled "Glow Engines". These run on methanol with some requiring a nitro methane additive. There are available engines that run on petrol but these are for the bigger helicopters. There are also electric models avaliable now that batteries are getting more powerful

To find out more information you should visit your local flying field and speak to the local pilots. You will find that they will be able to point you in the right direction when it comes to purchasing or setting up your helicopter.

It is best to have an experienced pilot to go over your helicopter before it's first flight to make sure all is correctly setup. You may also wish to spend time on a simulator. While these can be expensive, they offer the hands on feel without the fear of crashing or damaging your heli.

Look for helicopter events and attend these as you get to see a lot more flyers and model types.
